Trump Demands Jailing of Chicago Leader and Illinois Governor as National Guard Arrive in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump posted on social media Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic party.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of state military troops in the Chicago region under orders from the federal administration, notwithstanding vehement protests from Illinois authorities including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I am staying anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What's next on the road toward full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, National Guard units from Texas had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 50 miles from Chicago, as the federal government advances with its hardline crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, including homicides.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military forces readying for deployment, per reports. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would not perform police functions but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and other supplies. Trailers were set up in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered no-fly zones over the army reserve center for security reasons until 6 December.

Federal authorities has intensified deportation operations in the city in the past month, sparking demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in Broadview.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit targeting the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also issued an executive order on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and related personnel from using city-owned property as staging areas for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged the president of using military forces as "political props" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and make acceptable the presence of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic federal law limits the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. However, the president has stated he would be willing to activate the Insurrection Act, which allows a president to send active duty military in regions that are failing to put down an insurrection or are resisting national authority.

Since starting his new administration, Trump has dispatched or discussed deploying troops to over ten cities, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the military presence is necessary to combat crime and protect ICE officers.

Statistics shows that most violent crime nationwide has declined in recent years. In the city, for example, homicides were reduced nearly one-third to 278 through August, according to law enforcement reports.

New survey data published on that day revealed that the majority of US citizens oppose the deployment of military forces without an foreign danger.
